Bachis :silent: Empty Bachis :silent:

Post by Zenova Fri Jan 30, 2009 10:05 pm

Lol since this part is empty (yay) I guess I'll start the first topic which is also my first time starting a topic.

Since this is supposed to be a shopping mall section so... well I need to ask a question. Does anyone know where to get good bachis? I really need a pair urgently.

I know where the CO shops are at Bras Basah but not really interested. Lol B.L.Y.X you still haven't told me where you got your bachi ><

Well, if anyone knows, help me out a little here? Thanks Surprised

I got my bachis from Daiso (Plaza Singapura) at S$2 apiece. They are actually rolling pins and already lacquered. But I'm not gonna recommend you getting your bachis from Daiso because it is freaking short, like 20cm. Not good for playing fast songs from muzukashii and oni levels. I think a lot of people here will agree that it is too short to be a good bachi even though I like the feel of it in my hands. Razz

Having said that, there are rolling pins longer than 20cm, and would make a better bachi that is selling for (I think) S$2.30 at Japan Home. Quite easy to identify from the shelves in the shop because they only sell one type of rolling pin. You might want to lacquer it on your own Smile They sell lacquer at Daiso too! donWink=D

One other way is to DIY! Tools and materials are available from Daiso as well. (Ehhhh I sound like a commercial for them sia) The IMM outlet has materials like wooden rods which I think is around 43cm long (per rod), not too sure about the diameter though... but it's definitely thick enough to be a bachi. I cannot remember which section it is located at, but I know it's just in front of the Gardening section. Then you can get sandpaper, lacquer, paint etc etc to do some finishing on the bachi Smile

Mine and ck are authentic bachi from CO shops. Recently feel that it's not long enough but overall, I like the feel of my bachi. =p

Most of the others here have rolling pins as their bachi. So if you don't like real CO bachi, go for rolling pins. xD

Well that's for sure because it is made for hitting drums while our "bachis" are made for flattening dough to make gyoza and pasteries Razz

Mine also from CO, just that I told the person to modify it for me.

You can just ask or try any they have first. Mine are heavy, as most of the people here would agree (because it is used for dragon boat, just modified to fit my liking).

Depends on what you want, light, heavy, long, short, they all have.

CO bachis are actually better in a sense, their made for playing, so they won't spoil as easily as those rolling pin type.

If you are really into making it, then head down to DIY shops/timber shop and buy their wood and make it yourself.

Which CO shop you went to?
Cos' the shop my friend bought me, doesn't have all those varieties like light, heavy, long, short for taiko bachi. They have other bachi but those are for various types of CO drums and not for taiko.

Don't know. Is my uncle bring me there (Somewhere at Bugis, I forget where, cause I remember getting lost at the place also). He has an orchestra group and plays several instruments (mainly er hu and flute) so he knows quite a lot about instruments.

They have a shelf where they store their goods (sticks). I saw about more than 10 variety of them. Short, long, thick, thin etc etc. They had a mini-workshop as well, where if you think the sticks are too long, they can help you cut a little.

Just told the shopkeeper that I want one for Taiko, and she shows me all those suitable.

Mine came at a price: $12. Although expensive (than most of yours), I find the quality of the wood good (study), and "feeling" excellent. Although a little heavy but who cares. Stamina training.

One thing though I remember, she mentioned that the tip MUST be BLUNT and SMOOTH, or the drum (the leather or whatsoever) will be damaged. (No wonder 2P drum at JP got one "hole"). Now it all make sense. LOL. I bet sooner or later, Zone-X will change one new one for us.

Aiyah, different. I remember last time it's a local person.

Eh, different shop le. The shop I went to, the shopkeeper is an old lady. Then got a lot uncles (40+ one).

I now remember roughly where. You know Bugis OG, you cross the road from there into the old old HDB flat. Around there. (near Sim Lim Tower). Only remember it is at the second floor. That's all.

Long zhou is the name of the plumb person, but he's not always there de. haha~
And the shop i went to is on the second floor too! =D
And it's at the corner where you have to walk all the way in. xD
The place really old sia when you walk up the stairs.
The bachi is placed in compartments in a big cupboard-like thing. And that big cupboard thing is right beside the entrance and facing the counter where the old lady stands behind there. xD

The shop is not very huge but in the middle, there's a round table with chairs surrounding it. Behind is the workshop where they saw off my bachi. Surprisingly, they sell violin there too. Razz
So i guess should be the same shop. lolz~

Does it happen to be that, the next shop sells vases? Looks like it's the same shop. (Cause I remember my uncle tell me go shop #02-XX then when I went there, I saw a shop that sells vases and was like erm, wrong place and went somewhere. LOL. Actually the shop beside it only.)

Yes, I remember the place sells violin as well (Cause I took one to play)
Yes, got one round table (like antique table from china one, made of stone/ceramics)
Bachi next to the entrance, yes.
The cupboard faces the old lady also.
Below the shop (level 1) is a hawker center.
Workshop behind also, yes.

Maybe when you were there, there aren't many for you to pick from. When I was there, there were more than 10 different types.

LOLz~ Yaya!! The CO shop is pretty much "hidden" kind and below the shop is a hawker center. The round table is those china-looking antique type made of ceramics or something. haha~ And the counter is clear glass where different types of CO accessories are put there to display and sell (eg, the double reeds, erhu/cello rosin etc etc)
I think it's the same shop. =P

When i got there, there's different bachis, but most of them are not suitable for taiko though. So i asked the old lady and she said there's only two types there so i bought those. She even show me the raw material the bachi is made of (a small six-sided wood trunk).

I'll give as much details as possible. I just went past there on my way to Sim Lim square.

Rochor Square (or something like that, opposite OG. cross the road)
Second floor. Near the corner.
The next shop besides it sell vases (or china).
Below the shop is a hawker center, you can access the stairs next to it.

If you all want, look for old folks there, who happens to be playing Chinese instruments, ask them for the CO shop, they'll most likely know.
